Tracking Chicago Bears’ 2012 NFL Undrafted Free Agent Signings

The draft is over, but the moves, they keep on coming.

Right after the Mr. Irrelevant pick, teams got on the phones to leap on players who had dropped off the radar completely.

The Bears lost no time at all before adding another 11 players to their roster on Sunday.

Last season, the Bears had several undrafted free agents make the final roster, so it’s worth noting a little about who these guys are.

Alvester Alexander, RB, Wyoming

Alexander left early to enter the NFL Draft after a career in which he became the third ranked player in school history for touchdowns with 27. While he played well, he was out rushed by his quarterback. He’s got decent size (5’11”, 208) but average speed  and strength. More than likely a camp body, he could stick on the practice squad.

Brittan Golden, WR, West Texas A&M

Golden was a very productive receiver for the Buffalos last season, compiling 1,076 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. He was a First Team all-Lone Star Conference and all-South Central Region selection this year, as well as a Third Team All-American choice.

Interesting Bears connection—offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb is a former West Texas player who the Bears drafted late in the 2010 NLF draft.

James Brown, OT/OG, Old Dominion

I give the Bears credit—they finally got some offensive line help. Some people had Brown going in the middle to late rounds, so this could be a gift for the Bears. He will probably start out as a guard, and if he can add a little more mass and muscle as well as improve his footwork, he might be able to do well as a tackle.

One of the better UDFA signings by anyone.

Adrien Cole, LB, Louisiana Tech

Cole was productive in the WAC, racking up 72 solo tackles in 2011 (120 total) and being named WAC Defensive player of the year. He’s a bit short (5’11”) and an average athlete at best but could step up as a situational guy.

Ronnie Cameron, DT, Old Dominion

Cameron is a strong looking guy who gets a little lazy. When he’s focused he does a great job shedding blocks and rushing the ballcarrier or passer. He’s got a nice combination of speed and size (6’2″, 299), but he’s going to need to keep his focus play to play if he wants to make this team.

Terriun Crump, WR, Western Illinois

A big guy, but not terribly fast, Crump could serve as a red zone target or possibly an H-back. He’s got a hill to climb to make the team, but his versatility could get him a spot on the practice squad.

A.J. Greene, OT, Albany

Greene projects as a likely guard if he makes the squad at all. There hasn’t been much buzz about him and frankly this is a depth pickup I don’t expect to pan out.

Jeremy Jones, S, Wayne State

Jones was quite the ballhawk last year, snagging nine interceptions (one of which he took to the house) last year and being named All-GLIAC, Defensive Back of Year and was a Division II First Team All American. He’s fearless and takes some chances but may find himself overmatched by the larger, faster and more polished receivers at the Pro Level.

Trevor Coston, S, Maine

Coston’s initial work will probably be as a returner specialist something he excelled at while playing at Maine. He’s a solid cover safety who can range all over the field. At 5’10” he’s a bit undersized in coverage, but he’s a willing tackler and will be excellent in run support.

Ronnie Thornton, LB, Southern Mississippi

Thornton is a big dude with very nice speed for his size. Unfortunately, he has issues reading a play and therefore is slow to react to it. It’s instinct, and some guys have it, some don’t. If you have to think through every play on every down, that’s an issue. He’s probably a special teams guy, but I have a suspicion he won’t make it.

Chris Summers, WR, Liberty

At 6’4″, Summers is a huge guy with some decent wheels (4.58 40) and a nice vertical leap. He has shown at a small school level that he can fight off defenders for the ball, but is he too raw to do it at the Pro level? Summers is a big target and I expect the Bears to give him a chance to be a red zone guy for them in camp. If he shows some improvement, he could make the team.

NBA playoffs,
