The Big Five Theory: How the Chicago Bears Stack Up

There is a consensus in the NFL that if you have these five positions solidified with impact, Pro Bowl-quality players, you can have the rest of the team filled with average to slightly above average role players,& still contend to win it all. I happen to agree with this theory. It makes all the sense in the world to me. Here in Chicago, I’ve heard many ex-Bears speak of it including names like Doug Buffone, Ed O’Bradovich, Dan Hampton, Glenn Kozlowski, Tom Thayer and Jay Hilgenberg. Those positions are quarterback, defensive end, wide receiver, left tackle, and cornerback. Now in today’s NFL, being a pass-first league, I think having a play-making, ball-hawking free safety would work just as well for teams who run primarily zone-based defenses like here in Chicago with the cover two.
Going by the assumption that this theory is dead on, let’s see how the Bears stack up to the main competition in the conference as well as their division.
