Roger Goodell: 2016 Superbowl to Be Held in Chicago?

The Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell earlier Friday in regards to possibly bringing the big dance to the Windy City in the not-so-distant future. The commissioner was in town to officially recognize Soldier Field as the NFL’s first “LEED” stadium and publicly speak about the latest on the Bounty Scandal.
While most would love to see the NFL’s biggest game being played in some of the most iconic arenas, can it be an actual possibility?
Many of us have played on video game consoles with warm weather teams competing in harsh climates. Cam Newton, Matt Schaub, Phillip Rivers, and other warm weather players of the likes competing in the cold could create endless scenarios that would never have happened otherwise. It would make another angle and an create an additional test for the teams competing to lift the Lombardi Trophy.
While the plans are still in the rudimentary preliminary stages, the wheels are in motion to potentially bring the show to Soldier Field as early as 2016. Supposedly, with the game being played in New York in 2014, it will be a “try out” of sorts to test if the NFL’s elite can handle playing The Big Game in a frosty environment. Goodell stated in regards to the game being played in New York, “I think if we can do it successfully there, I think that opens up doors that we’ll all be looking at.”
Some issues still to be kept in mind are the relatively small size of the stadium (around 60,000 seats) along with the actual condition of the grass and field in the frigid weather, although the climate in Chicago is generally a tossup.
Chicago lost out on the bid for the 2016 Olympics, but I’m sure most of us wouldn’t mind “settling” for the Granddaddy of them all. Most of the world has been impressed with how the city handled the recent NATO meetings and that could be taken as a positive sign.
Can it happen? Yes.
Will it? We’re facing long odds, but as the old adage goes, “Never say never.”
