NFL Week 5 Power Rankings: Where Do the Chicago Bears Belong?

NFL power rankings are a subjective thing and rarely are two peoples’ lists ever exactly the same. At my site, www.GuysNation.com, I once again took a hard look at all 32 teams, compared their records, the average points they’ve scored and allowed per game, their strength of schedule, and came up with the NFL power rankings for Week 5 in the 2010 NFL season.
Last week, the Chicago Bears were in my top three, given their undefeated record, and I took a lot of flak for that. People said that I didn’t delve into the meat of their on-field results, claiming that the Bears weren’t as good as their record caused them to appear.
I took that advice and I looked deeper, and I didn’t like what I found.
Two of the Bears’ victories were very weak. They should’ve lost to the Lions, with a rule interpretation keeping Detroit from getting the upset in Chicago in Week 1. Then in Week 3 when the Bears returned to Soldier Field, they were gifted a victory with all the penalties called on the Packers, and even at that it took a late field goal to win the game for the Bears on their home turf.
The Week 2 victory was a bit thin as well, only beating Dallas by seven, albeit the game being played in Texas.
Then you have the Week 4 loss against the Giants by two touchdowns. I wasn’t high on the Giants going into that game, and I’m still not, which makes me dislike that loss for Chicago. The other thing that makes me hate that two touchdown loss is the fact that the Bears only mustered three points. I know the Chicago defense is their strong suit and always has been, but that’s terrible.
Between the three quarterbacks who attempted passes, they didn’t combine for 120 yards, nor 20 combined completions.
The three running backs Chicago trotted onto the field didn’t do much better, taking the trio of them to combine for over 50 yards rushing.
So where did I rank the Chicago Bears? Could I have ranked them above the Green Bay Packers, whom the Bears defeated, even though the Packers have otherwise looked good?
How about the Kansas City Chiefs? They’ve got three wins, but none of them marquee, so there’s always the possibility that the Bears are ahead of them.
The Saints haven’t had any great victories yet this year, and their opponents haven’t been stellar.
So how about those Bears? For the complete rankings and analysis, check out the article on my website, www.GuysNation.com!
Unlike power rankings you see elsewhere, your comments could help persuade me to rank your team better after Week 5!
