NFL Draft Grades 2010: Chicago Bears Report Card

The Chicago Bears’ 2009 draft, which was depleted after trading for Jay Cutler, made little to no noise in its first season, outside of Johnny Knox. Jarron Gilbert and Henry Melton, the “top” picks, saw little and no playing time, respectively.
Once again, missing a 1st round pick to the Cutler trade and their 2nd from Gaines Adams, who tragically passed away, the Bears were once again short on ammunition this weekend.
75. Major Wright, S, Florida
Here’s a guy who said when he was selected by the Bears: “I literally ran down the street and just laid in the middle and started crying.” I understand how emotional this process is, but to here this guy say that speaks volumes of his passion for the game.
To me, he’s the best pure free safety on the roster. He has the opportunity to come in and play immediately. He’s a good hitter and very good athlete.
Grade: A-

109. Corey Wooton, DE, Northwestern
Wooton had a great junior year in 2008, but his senior year was cut short by blowing out his knee. He came into the postseason process without a ton of fanfare. Still, a player of his talent in the 4th round is a really strong move. At 6’6″, 270#, he has the size to contribute at weak-side left end. If he’s healthy, it would not shock me if he gets significant playing time this season.
Grade: B+
Chances of starting in 2010: 40%
141. Josh Moore, CB, Kansas State
Moore left school a year early because of coaching changes, so it’s understandable to see him fall in the 5th round. He has good size, but isn’t a great runner, but he’s good in short area and he’s a willing run-supporter. He is a prototypical Cover-2 corner, but he probably won’t see the field much this season. The corner position has solid depth, so it would surprise me to see him make an impact right away.

Chances of playing in 2010: 10%
181. Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan
When you talk about one of the most prolific quarterbacks in college football history, LeFevour’s name has to come up. Yes, he played against lower level competition in the MAC, and he played in a spread offense, but you can’t deny that he’s a good talent. In the sixth round, you cannot ask for much more. He has a strong arm and is a good athlete with great size, so to see him fall so far is surprising. Value is key at this point, and while he won’t see the field, he’s a developmental project.

218. J’marcus Webb, OT, West Texas A&M
The Bears went from mid-major to is this even a football school? Webb started his career at Texas, so you know the talent is there. He has excellent size at 6’7″, 335#. However, he has competed against inferior competition and there are obviously questions about his technique. Still, you cannot make too many complaints about a potential backup in the 7th round.

Chances of playing in 2010: 0%
Overall, Jerry Angelo did very well with what he was given. As he said in his post-draft conference, the Bears were all about sitting back and taking what was given to them. In time, we will be able to tell if these guys can make any noise, but for now, the Bears need to have a good year if Angelo wants to keep his job.
