NFL Draft 2010: Two More Chicago Bears Prospects

Things are definitely looking up in Chicago.
The Bears have gone through the initial part of the free agency period very well, having signed three players that will help them get to where they want to be on both sides of the ball.
However, the Bears still have some holes to fill, particularly at safety and on the offensive line. They may also still want to look at upgrading the wide receiver position, although that isn’t as big of a priority.
Continuing on in a series leading up to the 2010 NFL Draft, let’s take a look at a couple of players that the Bears may be interested in, one on offense and one on defense.
Larry Asante (S)—Nebraska
We all know just how much the Bears need a good safety. Despite the fact some people have criticized the way that Asante plays, he would be a good value in the third or fourth round for the Bears.
His athletic ability and physical play could be an asset. He is smart, doesn’t get out of position much, and understands where he has to be. He can hit hard, his tackling technique is solid, plus he can play well against the run and cover wide receivers.
There is a downside to every player. The downside to Asante is that he isn’t as productive in creating turnovers as some would like. He is also much more effective up close to the line than he is farther back (on the field) and may struggle one-on-one with receivers.
Still, he will be interesting to take a look at and could help the Bears out in the secondary.
Selvish Capers (OT)—West Virginia
Capers is one of those guys that not a lot of people know about now, but will when he gets into the NFL.
Capers is very athletic, can run block very well, and is very quick. He can also pull well on screen passes and moves up and down the line with ease. He may also be able to make the switch to guard if he has to.
However, Capers still needs to learn some of the finer points of pass blocking (which he should be able to learn in the NFL). He also needs to work on learning how to finish blocks better and work on his footwork. While he may need some work at the next level, he does have a very promising future in the NFL.
The Bears’ needs on both offense and defense are very clear and they won’t waste a lot of picks in areas that are not considered to be areas of need. They won’t be looking for players that might look attractive but instead will try to fill the holes on their roster and provide some quality depth.
The Bears won’t waste a lot of time on picks that could be good in a few years as they know they need guys that can win now.
