Jordan Mills to Bears: How Does the Louisiana Tech OL Fit in Chicago?

The Chicago Bears continue to add talent to the offensive line. Phil Emery zeroed in on improving this unit throughout the offseason. Louisiana Tech’s Jordan Mills is an underrated player who’s more than capable of making an impact as a rookie.
This is a player who features excellent size and quick feet. Mills is a hard worker, which helps him open running lanes and protect the passer. His use of inside hands is one of the keys to his success.
Mills isn’t a versatile player and only fits at the right tackle position. He lacks the quick feet to play left tackle and is too upright to bump inside to guard. However, right tackle is a position where the Bears need some help.
He will instantly create some pressure on J’Marcus Webb to raise his level of play. Webb now needs to worry about Mills, Jonathan Scott and Gabe Carimi stealing away the starting right tackle job.
Webb isn’t the only veteran who should be worried about his status. It’s hard to imagine the Bears still see Carimi as an offensive tackle. Chicago doesn’t need four players competing for one position along the line.
While Mills has a chance to challenge for playing time this year, he’d be better off spending the season learning to refine his technique. There are times where he raises his pads and gets a little off balance.
Aaron Kromer will work with him to become a sound player with consistent technique.
The biggest thing with this pick is that it upgrades the overall talent in a unit that needs an overall upgrade. It gives Chicago a player who can be developed and eventually inserted into the starting lineup.
Chicago’s offensive line got in such bad shape because they failed to bring in young developmental players. They changed things up in this draft and added two talented players.
