A thumb injury may have prematurely ended Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler‘s season, but apparently it didn’t stop him from engaging in “off-field activities.”

According to TMZ, Cutler and his fiance, actress Kristin Cavallari, were surprised to learn Cavallari was pregnant. To use a hockey metaphor, it looks like Cutler slipped one past the goalie.

Perhaps more apropos would be to say that Cutler fit one into triple coverage, which is ironic because such efforts of his normally end in an interception on the field, as evidenced by his 86 career picks. This proves that even when Cutler is “successful” it’s still considered a mistake.

Cutler and Cavallari have had an on-again, off-again relationship as they were originally engaged in April 2010, only to call it off a few months later. The couple got back together in November, however, after Cutler was seen supporting Cavallari during her time on Dancing with the Stars.

The news of an upcoming child is the latest development in a whirlwind year for Cutler. In addition to his waffling regarding Cavallari, there were plenty of on-field developments as well. In 2010 he helped lead the Bears to the NFC North crown, the No. 2 seed in the NFC and an appearance in the NFC Championship Game.

Chicago lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, but Cutler took a lot of heat as he left the game with an MCL sprain. The incident caused many to question Cutler’s overall toughness and his passion for the game.

Cutler rebounded from that criticism in 2011 as he was having a solid season with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and had the Bears at a 7-3 mark before a broken thumb ended his year. Chicago went on to drop five of its final six games and miss the playoffs.

Despite the injury Cutler seemed to be progressing as a leader as he took a beating behind a porous offensive line, but continued to produce. Even so, questions remain regarding whether Cutler can stay healthy and ultimately lead the Bears back to Super Bowl glory.

Cavallari’s pregnancy may have been an accident, but Bears fans are certainly hoping that acquiring Cutler from the Denver Broncos a few seasons ago wasn’t a mistake as well.
