Jay Cutler in Control of Chicago Bears Offense or Causing Problems?

You can’t argue with Jay Cutler‘s production for the Chicago Bears last week: 21-of-31 for 267 yards, two TDs and no picks.

Most importantly: Bears 39, Vikings 10.

But there was that comment he had for offensive coordinator Mike Martz

Cutler can be seen looking toward the sideline yelling, “Tell him I said (expletive) you.”

After the game, Jay didn’t deny it, admitting he was caught up in the heat of the moment.

“You know, I’m a competitor, so is he, so is everyone on this offense and whether we’re up three touchdowns or we’re up three points, a second- or third-down call is as important as anywhere in the game.”

In today’s press conference Cutler further explained, ‘‘Things happen…I’m not going to make a big deal of this; it’s not a big deal. We’re all on the same team in this building. We’re [working] to win football games.’’

Mike Martz also refused to acknowledge problems with the Bears’ quarterback saying, “Hey, during a game there are a lot of things being said. That’s not an issue. It’s just part of the deal.”

Martz even complimented his starter and said, “[Jay] has been terrific. I have no complaints about him at all. He’s brilliant, a brilliant guy. The only downside to that is sometimes I have a tendency to want to do too much because he is so smart.”

Coming off a badly needed win over division rival Minnesota, both Cutler and Martz seem to understand the need to put the team before themselves.

You can’t blame Jay for wanting to give the ball to Matt Forte or ignore play calls for seven-step drops that often result in taking a sack (thanks to that not-always-great offensive line).

And ultimately, Cutler takes the snap and decides what to do with the football. If he “can’t hear” the play, decides to make his own calls in the huddle or has more choice words for the play-caller, what happens?

With slim playoff hopes on the line, the Bears face another must-win against Tampa Bay in London.

Can they survive a fight between their offensive coordinator and the leader on the field?
