Report: Cutler, Bears Discussed Contract in February

Wednesday, March 25

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network provides information regarding Cutler’s contract:

Cutler signed on for seven years and $126.7 million last offseason. Not only has he not played up to that lucrative payday, but the exorbitant salary also limits what Chicago can do to add quality personnel to the roster.

A new Bears regime is in place, led by head coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace. Gone are Marc Trestman and the offensive system Cutler looked most comfortable in since his arrival in the Windy City. The good news is that the new organizational leaders are giving Cutler a chance.

By agreeing to negotiate the restructuring of his contract, Cutler is showing he’s at least open to the possibility of sacrificing to improve the Bears overall.

For Cutler to keep his starting job truly intact, though, he’ll likely have to guide Chicago to the playoffs—something he’s accomplished just once since he began his Bears tenure in 2009.

If Cutler fails to lead Chicago to the postseason, the questions surrounding his future with the organization will only intensify.
