Isaiah Frey to the Bears: Chicago Adds Nevada Cornerback in Round 6

The Bears continued to add to their secondary with the 184th overall pick with the selection of Isaiah Frey from the University of Nevada.

Frey was listed at 5’11” at the NFL combine and is coming off his best season, finishing with a career-high five interceptions and 16 pass defences. Frey was a key part of the Wolf Pack defences in all four years in college.

Though Chicago added both Kelvin Hayden and Jonathan Wilhite in free agency, as well as re-signing Tim Jennings, the starting spot opposite Charles Tillman is far from secured.

The addition of Isaiah Frey brings more competition to the secondary after the Bears drafted Brandon Hardin in the third round yesterday. To make a spot on the roster, Frey should be expected to be able to contribute on special teams to account for the loss of Corey Graham to the Baltimore Ravens.

Sports Illustrated had Frey as a potential All-American coming into this season, and he was named preseason All-WAC by several media outlets.

The National Football Post says that Frey “possesses solid speed and good size, but lacks ideal balance and quickness when trying to hold his own off the line in man.”

It seems to me that Isaiah Frey will be a project from whom the Bears shouldn’t expect any major contribution right away. Like many Chicago cornerbacks, expect Frey to take a “redshirt year” and learn the system before hopefully contributing in year two.
