The Bears have announced that Michael McCaskey will retire from his current post as the team’s Chairman of the Board following the 2010 season.

It was then announced that George McCaskey will now take over that role.

There was an announced press conference for 12 PM CST this afternoon as reported by Zach Zaidman via a tweet from his twitter account.

Zaidman is a sideline reporter, and Bears expert contributor for 670 the score sports talk radio station in Chicago.

Speculation will no doubt abound as to why this has happened, and what the team has planned from here on out.

The fact is that is it is likely the enigmatic nature of the family will continue.

They’ve always chose to lurk in the shadows rather than up front like maverick owners such as Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, or Daniel Snyder of the Washington Redskins, who want to be in the public eye.

This is probably why George was chosen over Brian McCaskey to take over as the Bears’ Chairman.

Brian is always the popular name of choice by the media and ex-player pundits for the one they feel should be the successor.

He is also the most personable and competent of the sibling owners, and children of Bears’ Heiress Virginia McCaskey.

It’s perhaps his willingness to be more up front and in the public eye that went against his favor as family, and team successor to the Chairman of the Board position.
