It looks like Craig Steltz may very well be poised to finally make his debut as a Bear at strong safety, with starter Kevin Payne doubtful for Monday night’s game against the Viking’s due to a ankle injury.

Steltz was a fourth-round pick in 2008 who’s never started a game, comes off of being inactive the last four weeks and basically used exclusively on special teams.

Yeah, he has seen some play at safety, but with any young player there is a learning curve and with the amount of playing time he gets.

How can you judge his playing?

To be fair you can’t.

Steltz played his college ball at LSU where, because of his kamikaze-style hits late in games, he enabled LSU to be able to play for the BCS National Championship in 2007.

They won a couple of games because of his play.

He’s a hardworking, blue-collar type player who’s been patient and unfortunately been wasting away on the bench.

While I was excited that da Bears drafted him, I was becoming convinced that Steltz was destined to be yet any other Bears player that leaves only to become a star elsewhere.

All I can say is, it’s about bleepin’ time that Steltz got his chance as a starter and it’s too bad he never got to play under Ron Riviera when he led our defense.
