The Chicago Bears reportedly added depth to their backfield Thursday by signing former Miami Dolphins running back Daniel Thomas.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reported the news. Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel provided some insight into what the new addition can provide Chicago:

Thomas was a subpar rusher across four seasons with the Dolphins. The organization drafted him in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft, and he proceeded to tally just 409 carries for 1,480 yards and 10 touchdowns while serving mostly in a backup role.

He never averaged better than four yards per carry in any season (3.6 YPC for his career) and also struggled to protect the football with six fumbles.

The Bears hope a change of scenery will allow him to finally start building off of the potential he showed at Kansas State. He posted nearly 3,300 total yards and 30 touchdowns in two seasons with the Wildcats, leading to the early draft selection.

Aaron Leming of Bear Report noted the corresponding move he expects, with another back being added to the roster:

Thomas joins a backfield that’s unsettled behind workhorse Matt Forte. He’s set to battle Ka’Deem Carey, Jacquizz Rodgers and Jeremy Langford for a place on the final roster during training camp and the preseason.

He’s worth a flier for Chicago after coming into the league as a hyped prospect, but he’ll need to show serious improvement over the next few months to make the team.
