Chicago Bears State of The Union: Coaching Staff, Cutler, and More

The 2010 Chicago Bears: they were who we thought they were  They were an incomplete team that wasn’t supposed to win 11 games, the NFC North, and host the NFC title game. But they did. And they did it without playing the type of consistent football that is typically required to achieve such feats.

Achieving that type of consistency takes time, and during a period when sports fans call for the coach’s head after a bad quarter of play (or the franchise QB’s after an injury knocked him out of the game), the entire Chicago Bears organization will be best served to stay the course in 2011.

Coaching Staff

The Bears have a coaching staff full of NFL head coaches, and in a league where head coaching carousels spin at warped speed that’s like sitting on a gold mine.

Would an up and coming assistant been able to handle the debacle on the offensive line the way Mike Tice did? No. Handle Jay Cutler like Martz did? No. Demand and maintain the respect of a deep, veteran defense like Marinelli? Doubt it.

Is Lovie Smith the guy to take the Bears to the promised land? Maybe, maybe not, but he is the perfect head coach to manage the staff of characters he has working for him.

And I’m curious to see what they can put together moving forward.

Jay Cutler

Yes, he’s a ****. Yes, his press conferences are painful to watch. Yes, he played awful in the first half of the NFC title game. No, the Bears would not have made the NFC title game without him.

In a year where most “experts” predicted 40 INTs and clashing with Mike Martz, Cutler cut his picks by 10 and lead the Bears to the division title. It’s time to start giving Cutler the benefit of the doubt.

The Bears don’t need Jay Cutler to be like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. They need him to keep his mouth shut and learn Martz’s offense. The Bears already have established leaders like Urlacher, Kreutz, Briggs, and even Peppers to handle the media and all that nonsense.

The last thing they need is him dropping his two cents, even if reporters beg for it.

Player Personnel

Jerry Angelo and everybody else that’s responsible for scouting and evaluating talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball, belong solely on the hot seat. This needs to stop. The Bears finally have draft picks and gaping needs must be addressed.

It’s obviously much easier said than done, but it’s your job. Get it done. Stop drafting guys in the third round because they can jump out of a swimming pool. Or anybody from Central Michigan in the second round. Sorry I’m not sorry, Dan Bazuin.

The Bears are a solid draft away from challenging the Packers for the NFC North title next year and making a return trip to the playoffs. It’s time to get on board.

In Lovie, Jay, and Jerry we have to trust.

Whether we like it or not.
