Chicago Bears News: Jay Cutler Unapologetic for Comments to Mike Martz

Jay Cutler had a very special message for Mike Martz during the Vikings game—a message that most Bears fans would love the chance to deliver. With :43 left in the second quarter, the huddle breaks and the Bears offense lines up. Before taking his position behind the center, Cutler stops, looks in the direction of the sideline and clearly yells, “Tell Mike I said (expletive) you.” I guess he didn’t like the play.
During today’s press conference, Cutler addressed the incident. “Things happen,” he said. “You guys were fighting in the hallways last week. I’m not going to make a big deal of this. It’s not a big deal. We’re all in the same team in this building. We’re going to try and win football games.” When asked if he regretted what he said, Cutler responded with a simple, “Uh…no.”
I love that Cutler is unapologetic. Why should he be? He has clearly been taking more of a leadership position this season and I enjoy watching it every Sunday. His footwork is improving, in the rare moments that he’s not running for his life. He’s making better passing decisions. His interception numbers are way down.
A combination of bad offensive line play and an offense designed to shorten quarterbacks’ life spans are killing him.
He should get in Hester’s face for his drops; they’re way too frequent. And that goes for Sanzenbacher too. He has every right to be angry when Frank Omiyale plays football like a turn stile. And he definitely has the right to get angry with Martz about the seven-step drops and the lack of bringing extra protection so that we can have five receivers sprinting down the field instead of three while Cutler is lying on his back.
It looks as though we’re finally seeing the balance that Lovie Smith has been promising since that loss in New Orleans. With 10 games remaining, Lovie might have finally reined in Martz. Cutler has had enough. I have to say that I’m with him. Thank you for sharing a message that we all wish we could.
