The Chicago Bears fan nation was shocked to learn that former Bears safety Dave Duerson was found dead in Miami on Thursday night.

The cause of death is not known at this time, and there is no speculation as of yet.

Duerson played his college football at the University of Notre Dame in the late 70’s and early 80’s and was named an All-American two of the four years he played there.  He won several additional honors and awards while he was in college and made himself known as one of the better safeties in college football.

Duerson was drafted by the Bears in the third round of the 1983 NFL Draft and went on to star on that famed 1985 Chicago Bears defense.  That year, he broke the record for most sacks by a defensive back (then seven and now since broken).  That same season, he was named to the All-Pro Team for Sporting News, Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writer’s Association.

He was elected to four straight Pro Bowls and won two Super Bowls, one with the Bears and one with the New York Giants.

Following his football career, he had several successful business ventures and was involved in several off-the-field and football-related ventures.

Duerson can be considered as one of the better safeties in Bears history, having helped them achieve many of their goals at the position during the Bears’ run to the Super Bowl.  He was known for his smart and aggressive play and was a leader on the field and in the locker room.
