In the first two rounds of the 2012 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears were very active, and they were able to fill some important team needs.

On Day 3 of the draft, the Bears were looking to fill the roster and find players that might be able to come in and play right away in the NFL. 

After trading their fifth-round pick to the St. Louis Rams, the Bears only had three sections in Rounds 4-7, and the Bears tried to get the most value out of each.

Evan Rodriguez, TE, Temple

Heading into the draft, the Chicago Bears knew that they were going to have to find a tight end at some point, and in Round 4, they got their man in Evan Rodriguez. 

At 6’2″, 244 pounds, Rodriguez played in all 13 games for the Temple Owls and led the team in receiving (35 catches for 479 yards and two TDs).

Rodriguez is a good receiver and is considered to have natural talent, as he makes good use of short-yardage situations. 

Many scouts compare Rodriguez’s style of play to that of New England Patriots standout tight end Aaron Hernandez.

The only obvious limitation on Rodriguez is his weight, as he may not be able to have the quickness he will need to get into the open field and create separation. But I love the value the Bears got with this fourth-round pick.

Grade: B- 

Isaiah Frey, CB, Nevada 

Coming into the draft, cornerback wasn’t one of the primary needs for the Chicago Bears. But it never hurts to have quality depth at the position.

Going into the season, Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman were the starters, and after losing special teams standout Corey Graham to the Baltimore Ravens, the Bears knew they needed to find a replacement in the draft. 

And they found one in the sixth round.

Isaiah Frey will be able to come in right away on special teams and be a contributor, but as a cover corner, he will need time to develop.

At Nevada, Frey was named first-team All-WAC, and he played in all 13 games a season ago. He led his team with five interceptions and also recorded 37 tackles.

Grade: C  

Greg McCoy, CB, TCU 

In Round 7 of the 2012 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears chose another cornerback in Greg McCoy.

McCoy was a special teams standout at Texas Christian University and made a major contribution on kick returns and punt returns. 

Like Frey, McCoy started all 13 games at the cornerback position, and he could have an impact on special teams right away for the Bears, who are trying to find a replacement for Corey Graham. 

Grade: D
