Brian Urlacher Injury: Update on Bears Star’s Knee Injury

Brian Urlacher‘s offseason has been mired in mystery, but Lovie Smith doesn’t seem worried about his All-Pro linebacker as the regular season approaches.

Smith recently told the Northwest Herald (via Pro Football Talk), “Just like we’ve said all along, I expect to see No. 54 on the field next week in practice and playing against the Colts.”

This is encouraging news when you consider the reports concerning Urlacher’s health during the past month.

CSNChicago.com reporter John Mullin reported on August 16 that Urlacher had multiple surgical procedures on his left knee this offseason.

That was followed by Chicago Tribune reporter Mike Mulligan‘s report (subscription required) that Urlacher had pursued experimental surgeries in Europe before deciding to have his knee scoped in a more traditional manner.

Regardless of Smith’s optimism, this is troublesome for the Bears. If Urlacher can’t go, Chicago would have to use Dom DeCicco and Jabara Williams more often. Both players bring toughness to the field, but they are nowhere near where Urlacher is in terms of physical ability.

Last year, Urlacher had 102 tackles and three interceptions. He also recovered two fumbles and defended seven passes. It was just another ho-hum season for one of the league’s most tenacious defenders.

In his 13-year career, Urlacher has made over 1,200 tackles. The Bears have relied on him for his consistency, sound tackling and all-around instincts since he joined their franchise.

Hearing good news surrounding this eight-time Pro Bowl player is definitely good, but the situation still calls for cautious optimism. At 34 years old, he’s racked up a lot of mileage.

Stay tuned for news of any change regarding Urlacher’s status.
