With the Bears final pick in the 2012 draft, the Chicago Bears drafted cornerback Greg McCoy from TCU.

This gives the Bears back to back picks at the cornerback position after selecting Isaiah Frey in the sixth round.

Much to the disappointment of the fans, this means that the Bears bypassed picking any offensive linemen or defensive tackles at any point in the draft, despite a glaring need for both.

An interesting aspect of Greg McCoy’s game is his kick returning ability, which earned him All-American honours with Yahoo and CBSsports.com. He finished sixth in the nation with an average of 30.6 yards per return and two touchdowns.

With the addition of Eric Weems and Devin Thomas, the Bears seem to be stocking up on special teams players, maybe so they can enhance Devin Hester’s role in the new Mike Tice’s offence.

Though fans may see this as a wasted pick, there may be some reasoning behind it. McCoy, who stands at 5’10”, projects to be a nickelback in the NFL. If the Bears are going to challenge Green Bay and Detroit, they are going to have to cover a plethera of receivers.

Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, Donald Driver and Randall Cobb all pose a threat twice a year. As do Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, Ryan Broyles and Titus Young with the Detroit Lions.

The Bears seem to be looking for that cornerback who they can develop to one day come in and excel in their nickel and dime packages.

Though McCoy and Frey may not contribute straight away, expect Lovie Smith and Jon Hoke to develop these two players and bring them on.
