By now we all know who the Bears drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft and we all should be scratching our heads a little bit in wondering what the Bears were thinking with some of the picks that they made in this draft.

It appears as if they hit on a couple of guys but may have hurt themselves in the long run (and even the short term) by taking some of the players that they took.  Let’s find out what the Bears did right and what they did wrong in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Major Wright-S-Florida-3rd Round: Not a bad pick but he may need some time to develop and the Bears don’t really have the time to develop a player at a need position like free safety.  Still, what can you expect from a third round pick?  Wright has received a lot of praise from both the Bears, the Florida coaching staff, and some other scouts in the NFL. He appears to be a guy that could have a good career in the NFL, but is he ready to start this season?  Time will tell.

Cory Wootton-DE-Northwestern-4th Round: The Bears must have been giddy when they saw Wootton available in the fourth round and they took him in hopes that he can help them out with depth at the defensive end position.  Hopefully, Wootton is over the knee problems that caused him to have surgery early this year and can get back to the way he played when he was healthy.  If he comes back healthy he could end up being a situational pass rusher for the Bears to start and may even work his way into the starting lineup not too far down the road.

Josh Moore-CB-Kansas State-5th Round: The Bears needed to add some depth at the cornerback position, and they hit the nail on the head in the fifth round by taking Moore.  Moore is going to be a developmental prospect to start but could see some time on special teams, and eventually he may quite possibly work his way onto the field in the near future.  He may just be the sleeper pick for the Bears in this year’s draft.

Dan LaFevour-QB-Central Michigan-6th Round: This is a strange pick for a team that has a solid starting quarterback and a decent backup (in Caleb Hanie) but perhaps they were looking for something a little bit better at the third quarterback spot.  LaFevour should be able to compete with Hanie for the second string spot and don’t be surprised if he beats Hanie out for that spot.  With some development and experience, should Cutler go down, the Bears may have found a decent backup quarterback.

Jamarcus Webb-OT-West Texas A&M-7th Round: The Bears finally decided to fill their need for depth on the offensive line and took Webb as their last pick in the draft.  We all know that most seventh round picks fail to make the active roster in their first season but after looking at Webb on tape he has quite a bit of talent and could end up making the roster at the end of training camp this season.  He will be one of the more intriguing prospects to watch for the Bears this offseason.

Overall, the Bears did a decent job of helping themselves out with depth but didn’t get anyone that could step in and start right away if needed.  However, some of these players could be contributors sometime down the road but this draft class is going to take a little while to develop.

Overall Grade: C
