3 Ways Lovie Smith Can Utilize Shea McClellin

When your defense is one of the most feared in the NFL, it’s usually for a reason, and the Chicago Bears are full of reasons.

Chicago’s ball-hawking defense, full of run stoppers and an opportunistic secondary, makes it one of the strongest in the league. Being able to run out 11 athletic and versatile defenders is a major reason why.

Speaking of versatility, Shea McClellin was a “do-everything” defender for the Boise State Broncos over the past two years. Lining up at both linebacker and defensive end on the blue turf, McClellin posted 16.5 sacks and 26 tackles for a loss in the past two seasons.

Bears head coach Lovie Smith plans to take a page out of the Boise State playbook and use McClellin at both positions (and maybe even defensive tackle)—again, more versatility and athleticism for the Monsters of the Midway.

True, McClellin hasn’t proved anything yet, but—along with the Bears—he is looking to live up to his reputation, which got him drafted No. 19 Overall in the 2012 NFL draft.
