Trevathan Will Require Surgery on Thumb

Tuesday, Sept. 20

Bears head coach John Fox announced Trevathan will need surgery, though it won’t be season-ending, according to the team.

Trevathan was among the Bears’ prized additions during the offseason, and he has rewarded them thus far with 15 tackles and a sack in the team’s first two games.

Chicago inked him to a four-year, $24.5 million contract on the heels of a season that saw him register 109 tackles and two interceptions, as well as a Super Bowl championship with the Denver Broncos.

Little was expected of Trevathan when he entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick out of Kentucky in 2012, but he quickly became a revelation for a Broncos team that was on the rise.

In 2013, Trevathan became a starter and delivered in a big way, to the tune of 152 tackles, three interceptions and three forced fumbles. Broncos fans hoped he could build on that breakout campaign in 2014, but he was unlucky.

A pair of knee injuries limited him to just three games, and they put his status for the start of the 2015 season in doubt to some degree as well.

Trevathan bounced back to appear in 15 regular-season games for the Broncos during the 2015 campaign, but his injury history has come back into play early in his tenure with the Bears.

While the Bears added a lot of talent to their revamped defense, they don’t necessarily have a quality replacement on the roster for Trevathan should he have to miss some games. Veteran Jerrell Freeman can fill in at one of the inside linebacker spots, but the other will have to be occupied by a less experienced and accomplished player such as Christian Jones or Jonathan Anderson.

The Bears don’t have much margin for error on a defense that has struggled mightily in recent years, and potentially being without one of their key pieces on that side of the ball could bring back shades of the issues they had in the few seasons leading up to 2016.
